What is Boring Mill Work?
Boring is part of the manufacturing process whereby a hole that has already been drilled or cast in an object is made larger. Usually, the parts come to us with a small hole already made in them and we then use various machines to increase the diameter of those holes and/or to make those holes deeper. You can think of it as the opposite of turning (which shapes the object from the outside whereas boring shapes from the inside). Typical examples of where boring might be used would be in shaping the cylinder of an engine or perhaps the barrel of a gun. Through the boring process, any size hole can be drilled as well as tapered holes.
While some boring can be done with lathes, more complex projects require the use of boring mills.
Boring mills come in a variety of sizes and capabilities. They can operate on pieces as large as 20 metres in diameter and can use as much as 200 horsepower. Inside the bores themselves, a coolant is used to keep the machine operating properly. The control systems for these machines are often controlled with a computer system to make them extremely accurate. Depending on the product or part that is being worked on, multiple measures must be taken to ensure the product doesn’t break or become compromised.
The process can be extremely challenging and should only be done by experts. Even something as small as a minor change in temperature can impact the final result.
Because of multiple factors, boring mill work is an extremely specialized process and often involves multiple cutting points.
